San Diego | 11.26.11 | Canvas Progressions
The tranquil background in this run of RELEASE is very funny, considering how frustrating the day was. We were off to an extremely late start after spending all afternoon searching for a diverse area to set up. We then turned to San Diego Locals for suggestions, and were basically told that we’d have to choose to be in either an all white or all black community. Furthermore, there weren’t that many people outside to begin with, so we ended up in a really touristy area. Once we finally set up, we immediately ran into the next problem. My brothers (2 big black guys), were the ones encouraging people to participate and I guess they looked pretty threatening as they offered out Sharpie markers. Needless to say, they ended up being the featured artists of this round.
Hollywood | 11.19.11 | Canvas Progressions
This round of RELEASE was definitely one of the most fun! We gained people’s interest almost immediately after setting up on a main intersection of Hollywood Blvd, near the Kodak Theatre. The diverse group of characters covered the canvases in a combination of comedic, inspiring, profound, and even offensive material. After writing “Eve was framed”, one man explained to us why the serpent was the real victim in the Bible. Another man quickly grabbed a marker and wrote “I AM IN A HURRY!” before running to a nearby bar. Needless to say, we had a book’s worth of stories by the end of the day!
RELEASE Mini Set #01
I’m experimenting with different kinds of paint before moving on to the official RELEASE canvases.
